The domestic cat is a revered animal in Islam.[1] Admired for its cleanliness as well as for being loved by the Islamic prophet Muhammad, the cat is considered 'the quintessential pet' by Muslims.[2]
Origins of reverence[edit]
Cats have been venerated in the Near East since antiquity, a tradition adopted by Islam, albeit in a much modified form.[3] According to many hadiths, Muhammad prohibited the persecution and killing of cats.[2]

Cat resting on a pillow next to an imam in Cairo, by John Frederick Lewis
One of Muhammad's companions was known as Abu Hurairah (literally: 'Father of the Kitten') for his attachment to cats.[1] Abu Hurairah claimed that he had heard Muhammad declare that a woman went to Hell for starving a female kitten and not providing her with any water.[4] According to legend, Abu Hurairah's cat saved Muhammad from a snake.[2] In gratitude, Muhammad stroked the cat's back and forehead, thus blessing all cats with the righting reflex.
History[edit]
The American poet and travel author Bayard Taylor (1825–1878) was astonished when he discovered a Syrian hospital where cats roamed freely. The institution, in which domestic felines were sheltered and nourished, was funded by a waqf, along with caretakers' wages, veterinary care and cat food. Edward William Lane (1801–1876), a British Orientalist who resided in Cairo, described a cat garden originally endowed by the 13th-century Egyptian sultan Baibars, whose European contemporaries held a very different attitude towards cats, eating them or killing them under papal decrees.[2]Wilfred Thesiger, in his book The Marsh Arabs, notes that cats were allowed free entry to community buildings in villages in the Mesopotamian Marshes, and even fed, though dogs and other animals were driven out.[5] Aside from protecting granaries and food stores from pests, cats were valued by the paper-based Arab-Islamic cultures for preying on mice that destroyed books. For that reason, cats are often depicted in paintings alongside Islamic scholars and bibliophiles. The medieval Egyptian zoologist Al-Damiri (1344–1405) wrote that the first cat was created when God caused a lion to sneeze, after animals on Noah's Ark complained of mice.[2]
Hygiene and neutering[edit]

In Islamic tradition, cats are admired for their cleanliness. They are thought to be ritually clean, unlike dogs, and are thus allowed to enter homes[2] and even mosques, including Masjid al-Haram. Food sampled by cats is considered halal in the sense that their consumption of the food does not make it impermissible for Muslims to eat and water from which cats have drunk is permitted for wudu.[2] Furthermore, there is a widespread belief among Muslims that cats seek out people who are praying.[1]
Muslim scholars are divided on the issue of neutering animals. Most, however, maintain that neutering cats is allowed 'if there is some benefit in neutering the cat and if that will not cause its death'.[6]Muhammad ibn al Uthaymeen, a 20th-century Saudi ArabianSunniimam, preached:
If there are too many cats and they are a nuisance, and if the operation will not harm them, then there is nothing wrong with it, because this is better than killing them after they have been created. But if the cats are ordinary cats and are not causing a nuisance, perhaps it is better to leave them alone to reproduce.[6]

A UK-based pet food company, Halal Pet Products Ltd, produces what they claim to be a completely halal cat food, which they named Muezza Pure.[7] The company justifies their development of the product by asserting that, while there are no laws in Islam prohibiting animals from eating haram foods, Muslims are forbidden to handle or feed haram foods, such as pork and carrion, to animals.[7]
Muezza[edit]
According to Islamic tradition, Muezza (or Muʿizza; Arabic: معزة) was Muhammad's favorite cat.[8][9] Muhammad awoke one day to the sounds of the adhan. Preparing to attend prayer, he began to dress himself; however, he soon discovered his cat Muezza sleeping on the sleeve of his prayer robe. Rather than wake her, he used a pair of scissors to cut the sleeve off, leaving the cat undisturbed. Another story is, upon returning from the mosque, Muhammad received a bow from Muezza. He then smiled and gently stroked his beloved cat three times.[8][9]

Cats have captured people's attention and admiration throughout history for the elegant grace and air of mystery that they project. People sometimes see cats appear to deliver spiritual messages. They may encounter angels manifesting in the form of a cat, see images of a beloved pet who has died and now acts as a spirit guide or guardian or catch sight of cat images that symbolize something God wants to communicate (known as animal totems). Or they may receive inspiration from God through their ordinary interactions with the cats in their lives.
Angels Appearing as Cats
Angels are pure spirits and can manifest in the physical realm by adopting the form of a cat when that would help them accomplish their God-given missions, believers say.
'Angels sometimes ‘assume’ bodies, as we would put on a costume,' writes Peter Kreeft in his book 'Angels (and Demons): What Do We Really Know About Them?' Other times, he notes, angels influence our imaginations and we see them in a body, but there isn't anything there. Kreeft writes that he wonders if his guardian angel sometimes inhabits the body of his pet cat.
Departed Cats Who Become Spirit Guides
Sometimes cats that nurtured strong bonds with their human companions before dying to appear to them from the afterlife as guardians and deliverers of spiritual guidance, say believers.
'Why would an animal come back to the same person?' Penelope Smith asks In 'Animals in Spirit.' 'Sometimes it's to continue their mission to help, guide, and serve. 'Some animal friends feel you can't do without them!'
Cats as Symbolic Animal Totems
Cats may also appear in the form of totems, images that convey symbolic spiritual messages. Totem animals in the form of cats often symbolize personal power, writes Gerina Dunwich in her book 'Your Magickal Cat: Feline Magick, Lore, and Worship.' 'Since times most ancient, cats have been a vital part of the magickal arts and have left their mark (or should I say “claw mark”) on the world of divination, folk healing, and occult sciences.'
In any form, a cat 'can serve as a calm, cool, collected guide who helps us to find and concentrate on our own creative magick,' writes Ellen Dugan in 'The Enchanted Cat: Feline Fascinations, Spells & Magick.'
Cats as Everyday Inspiration
You don't have to see a cat in spiritual form to derive spiritual inspiration from it; you can gain plenty of inspiration from observing and interacting with the cats that are part of your regular, physical life, say believers.
In their book 'Angel Cats: Divine Messengers of Comfort,' Allen and Linda C. Anderson ask: 'With their willingness to listen in silence and their frank, nonjudgmental gaze, do they assure us that no matter what is happening, everything truly is in Divine order?..Is there something so extraordinarily spiritual about the cat kingdom that, if we observe, recognize, and apply what cats know, we can become more joyful, balanced, and loving human beings?'
