A good holistic account of the development of Indian culture and civilisation from the paleolithic age to 1200 CE. Burjor Avari is not a professional historian, but he uses good sources for this account. The only drawback is that South Indian history isn't given as much attention as that of the North.

An excellent book on the ancient history of India, which remains readable and insightful throughout.
Great detail has been put into the history of the northern and central regions of India. Only the last two chapters are dedicated to the southern region so I hope future editions (providing they come into existence) expand these into more.
